CHAPTER 10 Dashmo Adhyaya -The Manifestation of the Absolute

This chapter has been named so because the lord Krishna   demonstrates  his own Omnipotent and absolute powers to Arjuna and insists to his favorite disciple that he should  listen to and be  aware  of the powers and the absoluteness that the lord represents to his devotees . The lord avers in this chapter that none in the universe is fully enlightened about the appearance of The Supreme Truth of the lord.  Neither the celestial gods, , nor the yogis  or even  the karam yogis have ever been able to measure and understand the, reasons,  intensity and the expansion of the lord’s manifestations into the human form on the earth from time to time. The lord reiterates that it is the love and the affection of the lord for his favorite devotee   that he is now revealing to him The Supreme Truth   of the lord Krishna’s, eternity,  omnipotence  and supreme powers that are represented in various appearances in different periods.

Thus says lord Krishna to his favorite   devotee,

Bhuya aiv mahabaaho sharanu param vacha

Yakte aham priyamaanaay vakshyaami hitkaamyayaa (1)

The lord said, “hey Arjuna! You must listen   to and pay attention to my supreme   word that reveals to you the secret about my powers that I shall be telling you now    for your welfare since you are very dear to me”.

Na me vidu surganaa prabhavam na maharahsaya

Aham aadirhi devaanaan maharishinaam ch sarvasha (2)

“Neither the celestial gods   nor the great learned   sages know about the secrets of my manifestations. I am in fact the     originating   cause of   all kinds of the demi gods and the   sages”.

Yo maam jamnaadim ch vetti lok maheshavaram

Asammoodh sa marateshyu sarav paape pramuchayate (3)

“ Such as that  person who knows about me as being unborn, the unmanifested, the perpetuity, and the godly spirit of all the worlds  , he is the enlightened amongst the mortals and  such a person is  absolved of all the transgressions and the sins and he attains emancipation  from the  binding of all the karmas”.

Budhdhi gyaanaram sammoha kshamaa satayam dama shama

Sukham dukham bhavo abhaavo bhayam chaa bhaymaiv ch (4)

Ahimsa samtaa tushti satapo daanam yasho ayash

Bhavanti bhaavaa bhootaanaam matta aiv prithvim agadhaa (5)

‘The ability to discriminate, the knowledge of the self,   the ability to not to get deluded forgiveness, the truthfulness, the tranquility of the mind, the pleasure, and the pain, the birth and the death, the fearlessness and the fear, the sense of the non violence the equality and the sense of equanimity, the sense of the contentment, the worship, and the penance, the charity, the fame and the defame are the diverse qualities that human being possess and  the humans draw all these  qualities from me    only”.

Maharashaya sapata poorve chatwaaro mana vastathaa

Madbhavaa maansaa jaataa yeshaam lok eemaa prajaa (6)

“All those ancient seven   great saints, the fourteen sages known as Manu, and the other creatures of the world and their ancestors as well the subjects have all been born as a result of my potential power”.

Etaam vibhootim yogam ch mama yo vetti tatavata

So avikampain yogen yujayate naatra sanshaya (7)

“The person who truly is enlightened about my true celestial spirit   and the power of the yoga such a person definitely gets integrated into my supreme spirit and is absolved of the need to worship me any further. There is no doubt about his being united with me”.

Aham sarvasaya prabhava matta sarva pravartate

Iti matvaa bhajante maam budhdhyaa bhaav samanvitaa (8)

“I am the cause of the origin of the   universe and entire universe   emanates and is all integrated into me only. The one person, who understands this and has the faith and the trust in my supremacy, always is devoted to me and they worship me with complete love and devotion”.

Machchitaa madgatpraanaa bodh yanta parasparam

Kath yantashach maam nitayam tushayanti ch ramanti ch(9)

“Such persons   who are my devotees, they dote upon me and are willing to devote their entire lives for me, understand about my celestial powers by discussing about this with each other and they preach about my prowess and the kindness, remain ever satisfied, content and delighted   . They ever remain integrated with me only”.

Teshaam satata yuktaanaam   bhajataan priti purvakam

Dadaami Budhdhi yogam tam yen maamupayaanti te(10)

“Such persons as are continually meditating upon me and worship upon me out of love and affection are given the enlightenment about my spiritual supreme truth and such people get integrated into me only”.

Teshaamev anukampaarth maham gyaanajam tama

Naashayamya aatam bhaavastho Gyaan deepen bhaasvataa (11)

“Hey Arjuna! In order to bless them and to destroy their inner darkness of the ignorance I dwell within their soul and as an act of compassion I provide them with the celestial shining lamp of the transcendental enlightenment”.

Arjuna having been blessed by the God Krishna and after having been enlightened on the celestial omnipotence and the eternal supremacy of the lord now says to the lord,

Param braham param dhaam pavitaram param bhavaan

Purusham shashavatam divyamaadi devamjam vibhum (12)

Ahusatavaa marashay sarave devrishinaar dastathaa

Asito devalo vyas savayam chaiv braveeshi me (13)

Said Arjuna,

“You are the Supreme Being, the Supreme Abode and the Supreme Ameliorator, The timeless person, the Supreme   celestial God, because ,  all    look at you as the prime saint, the lord of the lords, the god of the gods, , the one who is not born yet eternal   omnipresent primal God. The   Saints and sages of the stature of the godly saint Narada, Asit and Saint Dewal and great Rishi Vyaasa have all been acclaiming you and thus you have spoken of your   being the   supreme most celestial infinity to me too”.

Saravmetdootam manaye yanmaan vadasi keshava

Na hi te Bhagwan vayaktim vidurdevaa na daanvaa (14)

“Oh lord! Whatever you have told me I sincerely believe it to be true. Oh lord! Neither the   celestial personalities nor the demons are aware of your transcendental nature”.

Savayamev aatmanaatamaanam vaitath tavam purushotam

Bhoot bhaavan bhooteshu devadev jagatpate (15)

Oh progenitor and the creator of all physical beings, oh the God of all physical beings! The God of all the other celestial gods! Oh! The lord of the universe! You are the suprememost person. You   and you are the only one who knows    yourself   and your transcendental yourself”.

Vaktumrahasay shishen divya hyaatam vibhutaya

Yaabhirvibhuti bhirlokaani maamsatavam vyaapay tishathasi (16)

“That is why pray lord you are the only one who is capable of describing your celestial powers by the use of which you are you become all pervading and all powerful across all the worlds of the universe”.

Katham vidyhaamaham yogimsatavaam sadaa parichintayan

Keshu Keshu bhaaveshu chintaya asi bhagvanmayaa (17)

‘Oh God of the Gods! Pray tell me as to how do I reflect consistently on your prowess and pray tell me which manifestation of yours is worth contemplated about me”.

Vistrenaa aatmano yogam vibhootim ch janardana

Bhooya kathay triptirhi sharanvato naasti me amratam (18)

“Hey lord janardana! Please do tell me about your yog power  and the glorious manifestation in details because   I remain unsatisfied by hearing your sweet words  which sound like the nectar to me and I remain ever thirsty to listen to more sweet words from you”.

Lord Krishna on hearing these words says to Arjuna,

Hant te kathyiashyaami divya hayaatmi vibhutaya

Praadhaanyata kuru shreshath naasatyanto vistarasay me (19)

“Oh Arjuna, the great of the kurus! Now I shall relate to you my celestial manifestations primarily for you because there is no end to my manifestations as these are eternal”.

Ahamaatamaa gudaakesh sarva bhootaashaya stitha

Ahmaadishach madhayam ch bhootaanaamant aiv cha (20)

Hey Arjuna! I am the Supreme Soul present in all the living beings and I am the beginning, the middle and the end of all manifestations in the universe”.

Aaditayaanaa aham Vishnu jaryotishaam Ravi ramshumaan

Mariachi mararutaam asmi nakshatraanaa aham shashi (21)

“I am the Vishnu amongst the twelve sons of Aditi. I am the Sun that possesses sunrays and I am the controller of the winds and I am the moon amongst all the stars”.

Vedaam saamvedo asmi devaanaam asmi vaasava

Indiriyaanam manshchaa asmi bhootaanaam asmi chetnaa (22)

“I am the Saam veda amongst the four vedas. I am the Indra amongst the celestial gods’. I am the mind amongst the senses. And I am the consciousness amongst the living beings”.

Rudaraanaam shankara asmi vittesho yakshrakshsaam

Vasoonaam paavakshch asmi meroo shikhrinaa aham (23)

“I am the Shankar, the lord Shiva amongst the rudras.    I am Kuber the god of wealth. I am the fire god. And I am the mountain Meru   the tallest mountain amongst all the mountains”.

Purodhasaam ch mukhyam maam vidhdhi parth brahaspatim

Senaaninaa aham sakanda sarsaam asmi saagar (24)

“I am the chief priest. I am the brahaspatim. I am the chief general amongst all the generals of the armies’ of the universe. I am the ocean amongst all the water reservoirs”.

Maharishinaam bharagoor aham Giraamasmyekam aksharam

Yagyaanaam japyagyo asmi sathaaraanaam Himalaya (25)

‘I am the Bhrigu Rishi amongst all the great sages.  I am the monosyllable cosmic word Om. I am the chant able mantra amongst all the rituals performed by the beings. And I am the immovable Himalaya peak amongst all the mountains”.

Ashavatatha sarva vrakshanaam devarishinaam ch naarad

Gandharavaanaam chitrarath sidhaanaam kapilo muni (26)

“I am the holy banyan tree amongst all the trees. I am the Naarad Muni amongst all the holy sages. I am the Chitrarath amongst all other rulers. I am the ascetic sage Kapil amongst all the ascetics”.

Uchchai sharav sam shvaanaam vidhdhi maam mrato bhadvam

Eraavatam gajendaraanaam naraanaam ch naraadhipam (27)

“Amongst the high breed horses I am the horse Uchchai sharav, I am the elephant called Eraavatam amongst the most powerful elephants. And you should know that I am the ruler of all the men”.

Aayudhaanaa aham vajaram dhenunaam asmi kaam dhuka

Prajanshchaa asmi kandarapa sarpaanaam asmi vaasuki (28)

“I am the vajra amongst the armaments, and I am kaamdhenu cow amongst the cows. I am the kaamdev for the procreation in the universe. And I am the king of the snakes king Vaasuki amongst the snakes”.

Anantashch asmi naagaanaam varuno yaadsaa aham

Pitranaa maryaamma cha asmi yama sanyamtaam aham (29)

“I am the naagdeva amongst the snakes. I am the god of the beings in the water. And I the Aryamaa named father amongst the ancestors. And I am the Yama amongst the rulers”.

Prahlaadsch asmi daitayaanaam kaal kalyaataam aham

Mraganaam ch mragendro aham vainteyashch pakshinaam (30)

“ I am the   devotee prahlaad amongst the demons. I am the time amongst the astronomers. I am the lion king amongst the animal. And I am the garuda amongst the birds”.

Pavan pavtaam asmi rama shastra bhootaam aham

Jhashaanaam makrashch asmi strotsaam asmi (31)

“I am the wind amongst the purifier. I am lord Rama amongst the warriors. I am the crocodile amongst the fish. I am the holy river Bhagirathi Ganges amongst all the rivers “.

Sargaanaamaadir antashch madhayam chaiva aham Arjuna

Adhyaatam vidhyaa vidhyaanaam vaad pravadataam aham (32)

´hey Arjuna! I am the beginning, the middle and the end of the all creations in the universe. I am the knowledge of the supreme truth amongst the knowledge of any kind. And I am the conclusive judge amongst any kind of logicians”.

Aksharanaamkaaro asmi dwandaw saamaasikasya ch

Aham evaakshaya kaalo dhaataa aham vishvtomukha (33)

“I am the shape of any syllable. I am the compound amongst any conjoint. I am the endless time meaning thereby I am the end of the time. I am the omniscient. I am the sustainer of all living beings”.

Maratyu sarav harshchaahmubhadvashch bhavishytaam

Kirti shree vaarkav naareenaam Smriti merdhaa dhrati kshamaa (34)

“I am the death that annihilates all.  I am the originator of all that take birth. I am the seven guardians of angle that are the embellishments of the women i.e. fame, wealth, words, memory, intellect, purpose and forgiveness “.

Brahatsaam tatha saamnaam gayatree chhandsaam aham

Maasaanaam maarg sheersho ahamaratoonaam kusumaakar (35)

And I am the Vedic verse amongst the hymns. I am the gayatree mantra amongst the chants. I am the top month amongst all the months. And I am the spring season amongst all the seasons”.

Dhyootam chhalatayaam asmi tejas tejasvinaam aham

Jayo asmi vayavasaayo asmio satvam satvavataam aham (36)

“I am the gambling amongst the cheats. I am the power of the power wielders.  I am the victory of the winners. I am the resolution of the resolute. And I am the goodness of the good persons”.

Vrashninaam vaasudevo asmi pandavaanaam dhananjaya

Muninaampaya aham vyas kavinaam ushnaa kavi (37)

“I am the vasudeva your friend. I am the Arjuna amongst the pandavaas. I am the Vedvyaas amongst the sages. Amongst the poets I am the poet Shukracharya”.

Dando damyataam asmi nitior asmi jigish taam

Maaunam chaiva asmi guhyaanaam gyaanam gyaanvataam aham (38)

“I am the power of the sovereigns.  I am the statesmanship of the pursuers of victory. I am the silence of the secrets. And I am the enlightenment of the knowledge seekers”.

Yachchaapi sarv bhootaanaam bijam tadaham Arjuna

Na tadasti vina yatasyaanamayaa bhootam charaacharam (39)

“And hey Arjuna! I am the cause of the appearance of all physical beings.  There exists no such animate or inanimate object in the universe that does not have my existence within it”.

Naanto asti mama divyaanaam vibhutinaam parantapa

Aish tuddheshat prokto vibhute virastro mayaa (40)

“Hey Parantapa! (Another name for Arjuna) there is no end to my divine manifestations. I have given you only a brief description of the extent of my divine materialization”.

Yadhyadwi bhootimatsatvam shreem durjitmev vaa

Tat devaavagachh tavam mam tejoash sambhavam (41)

All those objects that are endowed with glory, brilliance, and power, you should know them as the small fraction of my great splendor. They all draw their grandeur from my greatness and magnificence only”.

Athavaa bahu naitain kim gyaaten tavaa Arjuna

Vishbhyah midam krasatsanme kaanshen stitho jagat (42)

“What is the need for this detailed knowledge by you, O Arjuna? It should definitely suffice you to know that I sustain the entire universe   by a very small fraction of my celestial powers”.
