” The Bhagvad Gita – emotional intelligence in teachings of lord Krishna”

“For one who has realized it here (in this world), there is true life.

For one who has not, great shall be the loss.”LORD KRISHNA AND ARJUNA
-Kena Upanishad 2-5

The Srimad Bhagavad Gita is a discourse between Lord Krishna and Arjuna (Supreme Soul of the Creator, God    and the inquisitive soul of the Favored Disciple of God). Narrated in the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata, Srimad Bhagwad Gita   is   sacred dissertation and the holiest of all communication delivered in   18 discourses conducted between Lord Krishna and his disciple Arjuna in 701 Sanskrit verses (Shloka). A complete philosophy of relationships, of life, of life after death, of ethics, of   emotions, of morality and of pious living   and of attaining liberation from the cycle of birth and death  and becoming one with the creator the God,  has been articulated   within these verses.

In the Srimad Bhagwad Gita, the   holiest scripture of all scriptures written for mankind, the essence of life has been sermonized by God Krishna himself, for living a meaningful, religious, superior, devout and complete life, a life that takes the ordinary mortals towards a transcendental life to alleviate from out of the everyday earthly existence and amalgamate into the heavenly bliss, to become one with the Ultimate God. The quintessence of a great, eternal, and sublime life that raises the ordinary to the saintly enriching has been discoursed , explained,  advocated and set ages ago when the Great God Krishna addresses Arjuna in the midst of and surrounded by the family, friends, and foes on all sides in the battle grounds of Kurukshetra. The  consecrated  sermon  for attaining  a pious and dutiful existence that the Lord Krishna sermonizes  about  to his most favored disciple  Arjuna   is  not  only and exclusively  been   delivered to  and  meant for the princes and warriors from the kuru and pandavaas clan who are  confronting each other   in the war   grounds  of Kurukshetra  for   gaining the controls   and the reign of the  throne  of Hastinapur  but  the great discourse  and  the teachings sermonized   by the Lord Krishna   enrich and uplift    the life of  all  human beings , be it a    prince, an ascetic, a family man,  a commoner,  a believer and a non- believer like the Lord Krishna   says  that the living and the non living are all his manifestations. He is in all things, objects, and all living beings that have faith and trust in The Lord Krishna:

He who seeks me, who is in everything and unites with me

Whatever his life may be, he lives in me 6.31

Lord Krishna tells Arjuna that “whosoever seeks Him actually lives in Him and anyone who lives in God can simply be a re-embodiment of the   saintly piety and the purity that God possesses. Seeing Him in everything and seeing everything abounding with His Holy Presence”, says Lord Krishna “defines a Yogi”. God’s sons and daughters will have to follow the path set by the Lord Himself if they want to live a life replete with and comprising of goodness, holiness, morality and a life that provides divine emotional fulfillment as has been taught by Lord Krishna to his most beloved disciple Arjuna.

The   Srimad Bhagavad Gita is a supremely sacrosanct unique philosophy of existence, a larger-than-life dissertation, an eternal song of the virtuous Soul, which preaches the ways and means to attain the fulfillment of existential ceremonial glory of magnificent life and soul. The discourse given by Lord Krishna is germane for all men and women of the   world. The wisdom as expressed by The Lord Krishna   in the divine Gita is   all-encompassing, expansive, worldwide and inspirational. It is not restricted to any single religious group, faction, creed, nation, culture, age, country or continent. It is related to the life of the people of the whole world. Based on the Upanishads- the ancient wisdom of the Seers (Rishis) and saints- the  Srimad Bhagwad Gita contains   the oration of liberation  of  human soul , of deliverance  from   doubts related to the worldly affairs,  of freedom  from the drudgeries of life,  of  the  attainment of the  peace  of the soul   through its assimilation into the supreme  eternal  soul, of  salvation ,of blessed  perfection for all human beings  and eventually of coming together of the creation and its  creator and the celebration and the zenith  of everlasting devotion of  a great disciple  Arjuna towards his supreme guru and the teacher Lord Krishna.

The   principles, and the rules of life as The Lord   Krishna promulgates, when analyzed in the correct spirit, speak of the life in its totality and not merely for the life in the palaces or war grounds where the nobility abodes, fight it out with each other for the perpetuation and expansion of their family lineage, and kingdoms. Lord Krishna does not impart education about the  military   strategy secrets  of war  to Arjuna even though he is standing in the midst of the kings’ armies where the  commanders  and the soldiers  are  readily prepared  to get at the throats of their enemies , to destroy ,  to annihilate and  to  kill each other. The Lord Krishna must pacify each and every doubt and query that    causes a vacillation in the mind of Arjuna about the ensuing war and about the relationships that are being killed   and massacred in the pursuit of the   rule over the kingdom of Hastinapur, because he has consented to   bless his dear pupil and accompany him as a saarthi to the chariot of Arjuna. The Lord Krishna, the know all, the be all and the end all of the universe is fully aware of the events that are preordained to take place in this war and he knows that, that the victory in this battle though will be with his truthful disciple Arjuna yet   He knew that His ardent follower Arjuna will need greater holistic insight into the emotional intelligence considered necessary to deal with the pre and the   post consequential   results of this   imminent war of truth versus evil. The fear of losing all near and dear ones even for those relatives who have associated    themselves now with the enemies of pandavaas have resulted into many misgivings, apprehensions, and questions arising in his mind about the birth, the kinship, friends, family, society, relationships, religion, life, death and the existential   philosophy of life and the journey of the human soul into the higher supreme   being and eternal spirit thereafter.

The   exploration of the emotional intelligence and its impact on the interpersonal relationships and human psyche in the modern times has so far been accredited to Goleman’s EQ model wherein he disseminates the self   and its supreme acceptance by the individual mind by making self – awareness, self- assertiveness and   self love as the centerpiece of all   interpersonal relationships be it in the social sphere, the work area or the dealing and living with the people skills.   As per Goleman’s theory an individual’s success in work   and other social relationship is based on the factors that induce healthy emotional intelligence and its application in day to day interaction in the social relationship building.  Emotional intelligence if viewed in this light   is a set of personality and behavioral factors that propagate meaning of the self, self awareness and self management in terms of individual’s discernible and not so perceptible dealings, communication, understanding and interaction with the people one comes in contact with for day to day living and with the extended family in the society at large. Some of the  emotional intelligence factors that Goleman prescribes are  behavioral patterns e.g., mastery of the self, internal  controls , social interaction systems, empathy with others, treating others the same way as you would yourself, internal happiness, the attitude towards work, the attitude towards the  people, the work practices, the  material success  and the individual success satisfaction systems. Lord Krishna’s counsel to Arjuna in Srimad Bhagwad Gita is not restricted to mere figurative and superficial emotional factors of a corporeal existence. Lord Krishna speaks to Arjuna about not a personality and social relationships, but his sermon   provides to Arjuna exceptional knowledge  about  attaining of the sacred and blessed system of eternal life that evolves  into   sublimation of the worldly human personality into the godly   spiritual existence, of a supreme person  who ultimately   becomes one with the God, the emotional intelligence ascends to a   further higher  step and gets elevated into the supreme spiritual intelligence like the Lord Krishna says to Arjuna:

He who seeks me, who is in everything and unites with me

Whatever his life may be, he lives in me 6.31

Srimad Bhagwad Gita is embodiment of highest level of edifying human emotional intelligence essentially representing those elevated human emotions that result into the compassion of the Lord towards the   protagonist and resulting into the understanding the secrets of the devout life of a karamyogi   (the one who believes and worship the philosophy of selfless work with no attachment to the results expected from the work) by the disciple. Though the God has spoken of the same but   Srimad Bhagwad Gita specially does caution about the malevolence of the iniquity doers and the non-benevolence of the Lord   towards those who do not tread the path of truth, even as the Lord commits the deployment of his   own army to fight alongside with the ascetics and non believers of the stature of Dhuryodhna, Shakuni and many others of their ilk.
